Nannette Harrington
My family here in Hawaii: John Doolittle
came with me to the last class reunion, Tramp is the Great
DaneXRottweiler, Rex is the Cockatiel on John's shoulder, Moonshadow
is the Himalayan on my lap, and Pax is the Alsatian ShepherdXGolden
Retriever. Now shown Adele, my sister-in-law taking the shot,
two nephews, Jack, 6 & Connor, 3, creating distractions, and
brother Kevin who all live just up the hill from us.
The beginning of our farm: July 1996,
after I just finished pulling out all the waist-high weeds.
1998, after planting bananas, papaya,
veggies and landscaping. The ditch was built by the
county for flood control, routing run-off into a big cave (old lava
tube) by our house. There isn't much soil on our side of the
island, (too new geologically) so I started the gardens where they
had bulldozed together what little dirt there is to build the
ditch. The horses in background are clearing and fertilizing
our future coffee orchard.
1998, another shot of horses clearing
coffee land, with Adele and Jack. That haze at the horizon of
ocean and shy is vog - volcano smog.
1999, a day without vog after we planted
the coffee seedlings.
2000, our first coffee bloom (aka "Kona
Snow"). These trees are all well overhead now.
2000, John's sister and her boyfriend
learning how to pick coffee. Sorry, I don't have any shots of
the real thing, but when I pick I look a whole lot more like Juan
Valdez, in flannel shirt, sweat pants, heavy boots, hat and gloves
to protect myself from sun, mosquitos, and coffee branches.
2001, bananas, papayas, etc. after a few year's growth.
2002, our new kitten catching rays with
the coffee. This little "hoshidana" (drying shed)
under our deck table is supposed to be for the drying steps of
hand-processing coffee, but Luna thinks it's her private lanai.
